New music books – Crab canons

I’ve just published 41 crab canons in four books. These duets are suitable for violin, flute, recorder, guitar, and other treble clef instruments. Here’s what some of them sound like. The sheet music can be found here.

I’ve been working on this project off and on since as early as August 2022, although I’ve also written a few unrelated pieces since then. Not the most productive two years, to be sure!

My next music project will be a collection of pieces in the same range as the crab canons (the two octaves upward from middle C). I intend to write 30 of these solo pieces — one per day for a month — using a brainstorming method involving chance coupled with a very large list of rhythmic fragments I made over the last two years. I will be more intentional about other features so that I make use of a wide range of forms, keys, and elements related to melody and harmony. My goal is to 1) create pieces of easy to moderate difficulty that a soloist would enjoy, and 2) develop material for use in longer pieces such as concertos and string quartets. I may create backing tracks for these 30 solo pieces (including piano and orchestral sounds).

Next year, I’ll focus on concertos and hopefully at least one string quartet.
